This delicious and easy breakfast dish goes by many names. I have always called it Toad in a Hole, but feel free to name it whatever you wish!
I think the first time I had this dish was at a friend’s home. They called it Toad in a Hole so that’s what I call it! It stuck with me and is still one of my favorite breakfasts.
What is better than a big slice of sourdough, saturated in butter, with an egg cooked into it? Nothing, that’s what.
I love to add a bunch of sautéed kale and some avocado to make this extra satisfying and pretty. I am curious, what do you call this dish?
My kids LOVE eating the little rounds of “toast.” Don’t skip that part!
- 2 slices sourdough bread
- 2 eggs
- 2 T butter
- salt and pepper
- Heat a skillet over medium heat with the butter, allowing it to melt and get nice and bubbly.
- Using a biscuit cutter, small glass, or lid, cut a round hole in the middle of each slice of bread.
- When your butter is melted and the pan is hot, place the bread into it.
- Take the extra rounds of bread you cut out and place those in the pan as well.
- SLOWLY crack an egg into each “hole” in the bread.
- Sprinkle with salt and pepper or other desired spices.
- Allow to cook for 3-4 minutes.
- Flip the bread over (and the rounds) and cook an additional 30 seconds or so, depending on how you like the yolk.
- Serve hot.
