Hi, I'm Kels!

The Best Sourdough Glazed Donuts

We all know by now that green food is good for us. Right? Just nod and say, “yes.” It would be wonderful if we could all sit around munching kale and seaweed all day . . . but that isn’t going to happen. We know these things are good for us, excellent in fact, yet we don’t consume nearly enough of them. I don’t think we fully grasp the power that plants have to nourish and heal our bodies. This is one of the reasons that I juice vegetables. Getting down to pure juice gives your body such an instant flush of vitamins and minerals at the cellular level. It’s something that consuming food can’t do for you.

However, I realize that it isn’t feasible either budget-wise, or schedule-wise for a lot of people to make fresh juice every day. Now there are a lot of greens powders available. They are basically a lot of plant material that has been ground down (in most cases) and made into a powder that can be dissolved in water or thrown into smoothies to give you that super boost of nutrition.  It’s convenience juicing. And I love it.

I have been on the hunt for a really good greens powder for a while. I wanted something we could take with us on vacation or that we could use on busy days or even to put in my smoothies whenever I needed something extra.

There are so many to choose from, and I found after searching that just because it’s green and in powder form, doesn’t mean the companies making it aren’t adding in a bunch of unnecessary ingredients. READ YOUR LABELS. A lot of times there are added sweeteners which I don’t care for. There can be anti-caking agents and other things added. It’s important to know what you are getting – especially when you are paying good money!

I have tried two different brands thus far and wanted to compare them for you.

The first greens powder I tried was Organifi. It is made by a juicing genius (Drew Canole of fitlife.tv) who I have followed for the past few years and so when he announced he was making his own greens powder, I got really excited. It sold out within 48 hours and then took FOREVER to ship. They didn’t expect that much interest and it exploded. I think mine took almost 3 months to get to me (that problem is fixed now). When I opened the first canister I was HAPPY. The color was so rich and dark and it smelled really good.

Organifi’s ingredient list (taken from organifi.com)

Chlorella

Chlorella is a green algae and a good source of protein, fats, carbohydrates, fiber, chlorophyll, vitamins, and minerals.

Wheatgrass

Known as the “life-blood” of plant life. Even the ancient egyptians worshipped this food for it’s positive health benefits.

Spirulina

A good source for plant protein! Spirulina is also high in iron and calcium. The Aztecs first discovered this food in Central America, and they consumed it daily for energy and strength.

Mint

We all know this herb as a fragrant addition to popular dishes and drinks. We have added this into our blend for the health benefits as well as the refreshing taste.

Turmeric

Turmeric comes from the root of the Curcuma longa plant and has a tough brown skin and a deep orange flesh and contains powerful antioxidants.

Moringa

Moringa is a plant that is native to the sub-Himalayan areas of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. It is also grown in the tropics. The leaves, bark, flowers, fruit, seeds, and root are used to make medicine.

Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is an adaptogen which is made of (a combination of amino acids, vitamins, and herbs) that modulate your response to stress or a changing environment. Adaptogens help the body cope with external stresses such as toxins in the environment and internal stresses.

Lemon

This yellow fruit is not only nutritious, it also adds a nice citrus refreshment to the blend. We’ve added just enough to give it a light flavor without overpowering any of the other ingredients.

Coconut Water

This natural refreshment is low in calories, naturally fat- and cholesterol free, high in potassium and electrolytes and is super hydrating.

Beets

Beets are good sources of folate, potassium, fiber, and antioxidants, as well as nitrates. Many people don’t care for the texture of raw beets, however, the isolated juice tastes great in the mix and is a nutritious super ingredient.

Monk Fruit

The place to find monk fruit today is in products, which use this as a natural sweetener. The powder is low glycemic and, and has sweetness approximately 170 times sugar.

other ingredients: organic rice bran soluble, organic lemon flavor, organic orange flavor, organic mint flavor, monk fruit

The thing that I love the most about Organifi, besides all of the incredible super foods it contains, is the processing. They juice the items, then remove the moisture – so you are getting juice powder, not just powdered greens! They also added coconut water crystals which help your body to absorb all of the nutrients from the greens/super foods. It is a very well thought-out product from someone who obviously has been juicing for a long time.

I also ordered some of doTERRA’s Terra Greens. I was curious about how it would hold up next to my organifi. A major difference in doTERRA’s product is that they add fruits as well as vegetables, and there aren’t as many “super foods” included.

Here are the ingredients:

  • kale leaf powder
  • dandelion greens powder
  • spinach leaf powder
  • parsley leaf powder
  • collard greens leaf powder
  • broccoli powder
  • cabbage leaf powder
  • wheat grass powder
  • alfalfa juice powder
  • oat grass powder
  • barley grass powder
  • oat grass juice powder
  • barley grass juice powder
  • pineapple juice powder
  • guava fruit powder
  • mango juice powder
  • goji berry powder
  • mangosteen powder
  • acerola cherry powder
  • lemon peel essential oil
  • ginger root essential oil
  • non-gmo sunflower lecithin
  • citric acid
  • guar gum
  • gum arabic
  • stevia extract
  • xanthan gum

When I first opened the terra greens, I was a little disappointed just because they weren’t intensely green. I love doTERRA products a lot. I use their oils every day without fail and they have helped me and my family so much . . . but I really did not care for this product! The taste was not good. Even in a smoothie I couldn’t hide it. And this is coming from someone who drinks a lot of green juices and uses maca powder in smoothies (SUPER strong flavor). I just didn’t care for it. My kids noticed right away and didn’t like it. They usually drink their smoothies right up without any hesitation but my oldest daughter wouldn’t even finish hers. I think it’s all of the wheat grass/barley grass/oat grass that gives it a very strong flavor.

After trying both, I bet you can guess which product I prefer! I love the richness and ingredients in Organifi’s Green Juice Powder. I know I won’t ever go out and buy those ingredients at the store, so I love having them available to me in this form. It tastes great just mixed into water, and you can’t even tell when it’s in a smoothie (but it adds wonderful color). If you buy more than one canister the price per canister goes down. This is something I will keep on hand for sure. Now I have to use up the Terra Greens somehow though! If you are in the market for a greens powder, I would highly recommend Organifi.

Thanks for the comparison! I’ve had the doterra greens and they are strong/nasty tasting. So if this other tastes better horray.

    • Kelsey says:

Yeah they taste so gross – and WHOOPS, I forgot I had them on my monthly order . . . UGH. So I even have another canister coming and I don’t want it! or want to push it on anyone else. I guess I’ll be eating them anyway.

  2. KRISTIN says:

    Awesome review Kels!

  3. Carmen says:

Just find someone who sells it and buys it regularly too and see if they will buy it from you. Alexis Pratt here in Raymond (if your coming again anytime soon?) drinks it and would probably buy it from you.

I’ve heard lots of good things about Organifi but i think it’s a bit expensive

  5. KS says:

I’ve been reading up on matcha tea and I suspect that intense green colour of Organifi is coming primarily from those leaves. Which are also super loaded with caffeine–3X the amount of a cup of coffee. Why would that need to be in their awesome green combo? I would really love to purchase this product but not if it’s going to make me an addict. So after reading lots of green powder comparisons and ingredient lists, I’m sticking with the doTerra greens.

    • Kelsey says:

      Hi Kara,
Thanks for your comment. Hopefully I can help clarify things a bit!

Matcha contains equal or even less caffeine than a cup of coffee. You can make a stronger brew if wanted, but the recommended dose contains 38 mg of caffeine (a typical cup of coffee can contain up to 200 mg!). The thing that matters though, is that the caffeine in matcha is completely different than the caffeine found in coffee and energy drinks. It does not spike your blood sugar, give you jitters, sleeplessness, or effect insulin or hormone levels in your body! It slowly releases over 6-8 hours and actually has a calming effect. Matcha contains L-theanine, which works in synergy with the caffeine. It still contains caffeine, obviously, but has very unique qualities that do make it a superfood that can greatly benefit the body without the detrimental effects of consuming energy drinks or coffee. I don’t brew and drink straight matcha, but would recommend it to those already drinking black/white tea or coffee as a replacement. I think any caffeine consumption should be well thought-out, and we get it naturally from many sources on top of what we willingly take in (soda, coffee, etc).

As far as Organifi, the dark green color comes mostly from the wheatgrass, spirulina and chlorella that are used, as well as the matcha — all are extremely concentrated and powerful. Matcha is one of the last ingredients listed, meaning it is a small amount per serving. With one scoop you wouldn’t be getting much caffeine, and definitely not enough to make you an addict. It’s not like you are drinking an espresso! DoTerra greens just do not hold up nutritionally and contain too much fruit as a filler for my preferences. For the price, I don’t think they are worth it for my purpose — a boost of nutritious greens to add to my smoothie or mix up when I’m in a hurry.
      Hope that helps!

Just wondering since you mentioned you’ve tried other green powder drinks have you ever tried Maximum Vibrance or Green Vibrance by Vibrant Health. Their products seems to be packed with many vegetable and fruit and vitamins as well. Just wondering what your thoughts were their products. Thanks.

        • Tracy says:

I was wondering the very same thing. I’ve been told great thing about Green Vibrance but curious if Organifi was better

          • Kelsey says:

I have not tried this brand and so I can’t speak to it! Sorry! I wrote this post 1 1/2 years ago and have since found that VITAL PROTEINS, who carries the grass fed beef gelatin and collagen peptides that I love, has just released a collagen green veggie blend which I cannot wait to try! It will be more of a one-stop shop for me, instead of buying greens powder and collagen separately! I have a link for vital proteins on my sidebar if you want to check that out.

Thanks for this review. I also bought the Terra greens and was really disappointed in the taste when I first got it and didn’t use it for a while. Later, to use it up, I added cinnamon, Tumeric, Cayenne pepper, and raw cacao powder. I blend it with a banana and a handful of raw nuts and I really enjoy it as a breakfast replacement made this way. Maybe worth a try to use yours up. I actually continue to purchase it now since I made this concoction, lol.

    • Kelsey says:

oooo that sounds excellent! thanks for sharing, I still have mine lurking in the back of the cupboard! haha. I will try this!

  7. Traci Barr says:

I read a review that stated Organic can contain a cancer-causing chemical. Do you know anything about this? Is there actually a disclaimer on the canister?

    • Kelsey says:

All dietary supplements sold in the state of California have to use the disclaimer if they contain any of 800 chemicals used in growing food. Basically most food would need the warning, but it’s only for supplements. So anything grown in the ground and then used in a supplement form. It’s part of Prop 65, which you can read more about here:http://www.organifi.com/prop65/

That’s what I know about that. These warnings are on more and more products now, because of prop 65. I have noticed them everywhere. It doesn’t mean something harmful was ADDED to the food, just that it may have somewhere somehow been in contact with one of 800 chemicals, so it needs the warning. If that’s the case, it should be on everything in the store! Pretty crazy.

      Hope that helps!

  8. Traci Barr says:

Sorry. ThT was supposed to be Organaifi not organic.

  9. Julie says:

Does the organaifi help with weight loss? That’s what I need:/

    • Kelsey says:

Some of the ingredients do have a metabolic effect, and supplementing with all of those superfoods will aid in overall better health and would be a great addition to healthy diet and exercise to promote weight loss. It’s not a magic powder or pill, it won’t melt fat on its own.

  10. Carrie says:

Thanks for comparison i use doterra and was wondering the difference between the two. Btw can you share a good smoothie recipe your kids love?

  11. Nichole says:

OMG, I just went in to do some research on the difference between TerraGreens & Organifi! And, your page popped right up! Excellent! I was so excited when doTERRA came out with their greens, but I cannot stand the aftertaste of Stevia. I just finished watching Drew’s video on the Organifi greens, & was very impressed. I, too, have been loyal to doTERRA for many years, since 2009, but if Drew’s greens are healthier than the TerraGreens, I will have to at least try some! Thanks for your report on this!

    • Kelsey says:

Thanks so much — I am glad you found it helpful. I STILL have that bottle of terra greens! HAHA. I don’t quite know what to do with it . . .

  12. Laura torres says:

Is this product safe for nursing mothers ?

  13. Pam says:

    Hi Kels,
Thanks for your comparison. I was about to order the doTerra greens since I’ve begun using their oils the last few months. I think I’ll pass on their greens. I’m disappointed their website doesn’t include a product list, and especially that they add all the fruit. Have you ever tried Dr. Josh Axe’s greens? They have fairly similar ingredients to the Organifi greens. I’ll have to compare their prices.

    • Kelsey says:

I haven’t tried Dr. Axe’s, they have come out since I wrote this post. But I would completely trust what he puts out. I also recently ordered the Vital Proteins collagen greens and am SO excited about those! It’s the collagen peptides with a greens combo and is basically the best of both worlds in one awesome punch!

    • Tabitha says:

I tried Dr. Axe’s green powdered product, and it was awful, the mint was an overpowering monstrosity. I read the review comments only after I had ordered 3 canisters of it, and most complained about the mint and stevia taste. Had I read the reviews first I never would have bought the stuff. There was absolutely NOTHING I could do to mask the taste, and I do mean nothing. I ended up giving the opened one, plus the two unopened ones to a friend what was in nursing school. She said she hated the taste, bug because of how good it made her feel, she was going to keep them and keep taking it. And she thanked me.

      • Kelsey says:

haha. sometimes we just eat nasty things that are good for us. I have now been using the collagen greens from Vital Proteins and they are easily hidden in a smoothie. they don’t have stevia or any added sweetener to them, which I like.

        • Tabitha says:

I want to try collagen, I have read many articles about it, and I am very interested. Also, I bought some Terra Greens yesterday, by mistake. I thought I was purchasing another product that my doctor had, and when I got home and took it out of the bag, to my surprise Do Terra Greens–oh my. I was a willing subject until I saw stevia as one of the ingredients and it immediately took me back to my experience with Dr. Axe’s product. I do green smoothies daily, and I love adding the green super foods powder to my morning drink– but I am totally apprehensive about this, I do not want to mess up a good green drink because of stevia. So I took to the internet to look for reviews and taste tests, and that search led me to you (thank you ever so much for your review). I really want to take this back and exchange it, but I have an hour’s drive to get to my doctor, so I’m stuck?. But I have read other testimonials and watched a YouTube review and I just might open up the canister. In fact the reviews were way better than I thought they’d be. So I figure I might as well give it a try (yuk!) but we shall see. So I just want to thank you for such an informative comparison review!

          • Kelsey says:

Thanks! I actually just finally threw mine away, after a couple of years in the back of my cupboard they weren’t doing anyone any good!

  15. Amy says:

Ok so basically you don’t recommend/prefer TerraGreens only because of the taste? That’s a bad reason to not recommend a product. TerraGreens are extremely healthier than Organifi so that reason alone is why anyone should recommend and buy TerraGreens. Plus, you cannot beat the price for such a healthy drink. Nothing tastes as good as healthy feels.

    • Kelsey says:

I don’t recommend the TerraGreens because they added a lot of fruit to it, it tastes terrible and no one in my family will eat it, and there are a lot of added “gums” that I could do without. The superfood content and concentration in Organifi is the major reason I prefer it, also the method of processing is a very big deal to me. As I said in the post, I love doterra and use the oils daily, but this is just one product that I won’t jump on the bandwagon with. I have had more response to this post than any other in the last few years. You are the first to believe that the TerraGreens are superior. Most have thrown them out or pawned them off on family members after trying them, including a lot of high ranking doterra distributors 😉
Thanks for your opinion and your comment. I eat/drink a lot of things that don’t necessarily taste the best, but they are good for me so I do it. But if I can’t even disguise it for my kids to drink in a smoothie, and it’s full of fruit anyway, then I would rather a superfood greens powder that they WILL consume.

  16. Kelly says:

I just read your review and I”m really glad I did. I was just about to buy the terra greens powder, it was recommended by my midwife but now I’m scared the taste will be unbearable. Do you have any idea if the Organifi is also safe during pregnancy? I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t be but you can never be too sure!
